South Bay Power Plant in Chula Vista, California

Countdown to my first live implosion!

Out & About

Tomorrow at 7:00 a.m., I get to see my first live implosion when the South Bay Power Plant, decommissioned several years ago, bites the dust.

I’ll be there taking a video, which means that I’ll have to catch the San Diego Trolley about 5:30 a.m. to get there on time. They are expecting many thousands of people so there’s no way I’m driving down there and trying to find a parking spot.

House finches at San Diego National Wildlife Refuge

Look this way! Please look this way!

How I Did It

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

On a recent hike in the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge, I found three house finches sitting on a wire. I took five pictures before they flew away. My intent was to get all three of them looking at me, or at least looking forward. They refused to cooperate. There was always at least one bird that was looking the other way. Begging all three birds to “look this way, please, look this way!” didn’t have any effect on them.

I got up the courage to do something about it as I was looking at the five pictures this morning. Originally, I was going to simply replace the one bird that wasn’t looking at me with one that was. Then I thought, why stop at three birds? After playing around, I came up with a nice picture of six house finches:

House finches at San Diego National Wildlife Refuge

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to tell me which three birds originally were not in that picture. Let us number the birds 1 through 6 from bottom left to top right. And as all good teachers would do, I require that you “show your work,” i.e., explain your decision.

My wise old grandmotherThis little exercise reminds me of my wise old grandmother. She carried her Kodak Instamatic camera in her purse everywhere she went, and she didn’t hesitate to pull it out and snap a picture. Once she got home she took all her pictures and mounted them in her scrapbooks and photo albums. However, she didn’t hesitate to crop them, cut them in two, whatever, in order to make the pictures better or make them fit the theme of her pages.

She used to always tell me, “What comes out of the camera is just the basics to start with.” It’s still like that, so if you aren’t using Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, Serif PhotoPlus, Photo Studio, PaintShop Pro, Photo-Paint, ACDSee, Gimp, Picmonkey, etc., you’re missing out on a lot of fun. The ones I use are Photoshop CS6, Lightroom 4, Photo-Paint X6, and PaintShop Pro X5.

Picture of the Moment

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

The cat show on Sunday was at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Usually when I go to the Fairgrounds there are another 50,000 or so people there, making pictures of the Fairgrounds itself somewhat difficult, unless you enjoy pictures of crowd mobs. However, Sunday was a dreary day, dull gray clouds with intermittent rain, resulting in smaller crowds at the cat show and the home show in one of the other pavillions. That allowed me to take time to get some pictures that I’ve always wanted to get, such as these two which I combined into one and titled Symmetry:

Iguana at Mission Trails Regional Park in San Diego

A visit to Mission Trails Regional Park

Out & About

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Although I live in La Mesa, I am just a block outside of the eastern edge of the San Diego city limits. Not too far from me, also at the eastern edge of San Diego, is Mission Trails Regional Park:

Mission Trails Regional Park map

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

The park was established in 1974 and, depending on the source, comprises somewhere between 5,800 acres and 6,150 acres. That makes it the largest city-owned park in California and the sixth largest in the United States; it also is the seventh largest “open space urban park” in the U.S.

Much of the park was destroyed in the October 2003 Cedar Fire which burned 280,278 acres and 2,820 buildings (2,232 homes), and killed 15 people, including one firefighter. The Cedar Fire is the largest fire in California history. Chaparral ecosystems recover rapidly from wildfire, though, and there virtually is no evidence of what happened ten years ago.

I go to the park quite often just to wander around, especially Lake Murray to feed the birds and squirrels.

Recently, though, I discovered the main Visitor Center:

There are great exhibits inside the Visitor Center, where I took the following five pictures. Of the five, only one was alive. The others had been taxidermied. You get to guess which one.

Pine Creek Wilderness in Cleveland National Forest

Jason and Koa, reunited!

Out & About

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Update on Jason and his little beagle, Koa, from this blog: A trip to Pine Creek Wilderness in Cleveland National Forest.

Koa was found by a stranger about ten miles from where we lost him. He was tired and thirsty but happily hopped into the stranger’s truck. Koa was reunited with Jason a short time later. Yahooooooooo!

I have now recovered mentally because I was really distressed about losing that little beagle out in the boondocks thirty miles from where he lives.

A trip to Pine Creek Wilderness in Cleveland National Forest

Out & About

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

This past Monday was a holiday here — Martin Luther King Jr. Day — and one of my Meetup groups, San Diego Urban Exploration, was going exploring. First you have to understand that we urban explorers don’t explore urbanity. No. Rather, we get out of the city and go explore the, uh, the boondocks. The boondocks look somewhat like this:

The boondocks in San Diego East County

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

In fact, the boondocks we were going to explore looked exactly like that! And this:

Our goal was to get to “the pool” in the Pine Creek Wilderness Area:

Since Jim needed the car yesterday, I took the San Diego Trolley to the Grantville Station, which is where all of us were meeting anyway. Convenient!

There were some fall colors lingering at the Grantville Station.

A great start to what obviously was going to be a great day!

I was going to carpool with Jason, an important part of this story. There were thirteen in our group, and seven of them had dogs, another important part of this story. Jason had his dog, a most adorable beagle named Koa. Sadly (you’ll under the “sadly” part at the end of this story), I don’t have a picture of Koa.

The drive out to the parking area is about thirty miles.

On the way we saw a helicopter.

Now helicopters aren’t exactly rare here in San Diego since the military and the California Department of Foresty uses them.

However, this helicopter was a little unusual:

The trailhead looked inviting….

Espinosa Trail & Secret Canyon Trail at Pine Creek Wilderness in Cleveland National Forest

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

….until I started reading some of the signs:

Espinosa Trail & Secret Canyon Trail at Pine Creek Wilderness in Cleveland National Forest

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Whomever was in charge of marketing for this place certainly knew their business. The trail looked absolutely nothing like the trailhead — a nice wide trail? Ha! Within a couple hundred feet (and we were going 8½ miles), it was barely wide enough for a dog, much less an adult person.

For about eight miles of the trail, the only way I knew that it was a trail was because there were twelve people in front of me. Thus I had to stay rather close to them, or risk getting lost in the boondocks!

There were lots of horses on the trail, which really amazed me.

Horses in Cleveland National Forest

Horses in Cleveland National Forest

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

I don’t trust my own steps on trails like this, so I’m sure not going to trust a horse that weighs ten times what I do. One misstep and it’s a thousand feet down the rocky hillside.

The horses in that second horse picture we had met in the parking lot. The second horse, the one being walked, is “inexperienced.” They were across the valley and halfway up the mountainside, which is where we were going, the Secret Canyon Trail.

Those two horses are another important part of this story. Remember, we had dogs with us:

The scenery was beautiful:

There are mortar holes at the pool. Mortar holes look like this:

Mortar hole

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Mortar holes are found mostly in areas that have oak trees. They were created and used by Indians to ground acorns and wash the resulting mash to leach it of toxins.

I also found a rock that reminded me of a big cat in profile, ears and eye whisker poking up and nose pointing out:

Cat rock

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

We caught up with the two horses at about 8½ miles. Perhaps I should say that one of our dogs caught up with them. Both of the horses apparently were being walked in the oak valley (you can see the oak valley clearly in the center of the very first picture), and Ash, our largest dog, started barking, spooking the two horses. The two ladies lost control of their horses, which them came running up the rocky hillside trail, which is where we were. It was a thousand feet straight up on one side of the trail and a thousand feet straight down on the other side. The trail was only wide enough for one person, certainly not thirteen frightened people and two frightened, stampeding horses.

Pine Creek Wilderness in Cleveland National ForestAt this time I was the second to the last in our group and Jason and Koa, his beagle, were behind me. I had only a split second to try to climb the sheer rocks or make myself as flat as possible against them to make way for the stampeding horses. Jason did the same, but Koa took off running in front of the horses.

Jason went after Koa and after about 15 minutes waiting for them to come back, we decided we better turn around and go back. I had a bloody arm from bashing into the rocks and manzanita, but fortunately, I was the only one injured, and it was just superficial scratches. The blood everywhere made it look worse than it was.

On the hike back, everyone we met said that they had seen “two horses chasing a dog.” Eight and a half miles later, back in the parking lot, we found the two ladies and their horses relaxing. Koa was nowhere to be found.

Manzanita in Cleveland National ForestThe two ladies didn’t bother inquiring if we were alright. All they did was curse the dogs and us for having the dogs. Since this is a family blog, the cursing cannot be repeated here. Quite frankly, I’ve never heard such language come from a female.

Jason and I went down to the Forestry Fire Station hoping that someone might have found Koa and turned him in there. No. Koa is microchipped and has a collar with owner information tag, but Jason didn’t have his cell phone. Jason and I went back to San Diego. He dropped me off at my place, went to get his phone, and headed back out to the Wilderness, intent on spending the night in the parking lot hoping that Koa would eventually find his way back there.

As far as I know right now, Jason and Koa were not reunited.

Lichen in Cleveland National ForestI’m still sore physically from traipsing seventeen miles through the boondocks, and I’m still stunned mentally from someone I was with losing his dog out there. I feel so bad. I can’t imagine what Jason must be going through.

I know there are stories about dogs and cats wandering around for months at a time and finding their way home, and beagles have excellent noses, so let’s hope and pray that our little Koa eventually finds his way home.

And the final part of the story: Remember I said that Jim needed the car yesterday? Well, I took the car keys with me, so he had to take the San Diego Trolley to his work. I did pick him up, though, so he wouldn’t have to depend on the Trolley on a holiday to get home late at night.

The end.

The end

Sunset at Sunset Cliffs

The new year’s first warm cloudless day

Out & About

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

I was up the entire night last night watching Novak Djokovik and Stan Wawrinka play an awesome five-set match at the Australian Open Tennis Championships. Djokovik won 1-6 7-5 6-4 6-7(5) 12-10. I think it was around 6:00 a.m. my time when the match finally ended.

Apparently I was so tired that I didn’t hear Zoey the Cool Cat trying to wake me up to play fetch with her red ring so she got a little upset, jumped on the dining room table (where she knows she’s not allowed), and proceeded to knock a glass bottle onto the floor. Broken glass everywhere. However, I was wide awake after just an hour’s sleep.

After cleaning up the broken glass, I decided to punish the Cool Cat by taking off and leaving her at home. Here she is in the office window staring at me as I was leaving:

Zoey the Cool Cat

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

The expression on her face tells you she’s not exactly happy about me taking off.

I went out to the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge where, after all the recent rains, I found a vernal pool that is not on any of my vernal pool lists:

Vernal pool and Mount Miguel

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

As I came to the historic Sweetwater River Bridge, built in 1929, I found a motorcycle club taking pictures of their bikes:

Motorcycle club

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Every single owner had a smarty pants phone, and they all were trying to take pictures. After watching them for a minute or so, I asked them if they would like to give all their phones to me, go get on their bikes, and I would take a group picture with each of their phones. That’s what I did.

Later on I discovered a new trail that I had not been on before. However, someone else was using it:

Home of a homeless person

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

The guy was still sleeping. I looked in my wallet and found that all I had was a ten dollar bill. I put it just inside the “doorway” at the right and placed a rock on top of it so it wouldn’t blow away. I hope I brought a little happiness to someone today.

I spent about six hours wandering around the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge. I also found out that the Refuge was expanded from 9,200 acres to over 11,000 acres over the Christmas holidays. When I got home, look who was waiting for me in the office window. What a welcome!

Zoey the Cool Cat

After eating and taking a shower, I headed out to Sunset Cliffs to watch the sunset. Today was the first cloudless warm day of the new year so I thought there was a good chance to see the green flash. For those of you who don’t know about the green flash, see Wikipedia.

Although I did see the green flash, it wasn’t a strong one so it didn’t make a good picture. Here are three pictures that I did get at Sunset Cliffs:
