Happy Halloween

Halloween HouseHalloween is one of those days that is both fun and dangerous at the same time. People of all ages get to dress up as just about anything they want. It’s the fact that faces are hidden that can be dangerous because there are bad people out at all times of the year. Halloween, though, allows them to better hide who they are so they can do bad things, either to animals (keep your black cat safe tonight), people, or property.

On Halloween 1974, I was a sophomore at Texas A&M University, about 100 miles northwest of Houston. On that Halloween night, the fun of Halloween died for many Houstonians, Texans, and Americans. In years to come, children no longer had free reign to dress up in costumes and traipse through their neighborhoods gathering as much candy as they could.

Halloween pumpkinsOctober 31, 1974, brought out the most despicable type of person in Ronald Clark O’Bryan, an optician from Deer Park, a Houston suburb. O’Bryan had taken his two children, Timothy and Elizabeth, to a friend’s house for trick-or-treating. O’Bryan slipped several Pixy Stix candies laced with potassium cyanide into the bags of his two children, as well as several other children.

O’Bryan had clipped off one end of the giant plastic Pixy Stix candy straws, sprinkled the cyanide into them, and stapled them shut. Just before bedtime, still at the friend’s house in Pasadena, O’Bryan offered young Timothy one last piece of candy, the tainted one. Within a few hours, his son was dead.

HalloweenBy the time of his trial, O’Bryan was known as The Candyman. He was tried and convicted of murdering his child for insurance money, having taken out life insurance policies for $10,000 on each child in January 1974, and then additional policies of $20,000 on each child a few weeks before Halloween. O’Bryan was executed by lethal injection in 1984.

The only good thing to this tragic story is that parents are more aware of their children’s safety, not only on Halloween but throughout the year. Treasures gathered on Halloween are usually carefully examined before children, or anyone else, are allowed to enjoy them.

HalloweenCandy tampering apparently peaked in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Usually such tampering involved putting sharp objects (razor blades, pins, needles) in candy and fruit, often candied apples. According to some poisoned candy researchers (what a profession!!), some sharp objects were accidentally inserted into the candy or fruit. Huh? I’m not buying it. How do you accidentally put a sharp object in candy or fruit? Nope. Not buying it.

Candy tampering appears to have died down somewhat in recent years, but it only takes one incident to cause harm. Don’t let that one incident be your child. Accompany your children on their trick-or-treating and note which candy came from which house.

Added with edit: A news story just breaking is about a child who found a rusty razor blade in a package of M&M’s. Police initially say it’s probably a quality control issue because the package appears not to have been tampered with. Doesn’t matter whether or not it’s quality control. It happens! This one probably from a disgruntled or deranged Mars employee! Here’s the report: Razor in Halloween candy.

In remembrance of Timothy. You are not forgotten.

Mylar—Not in this century or the next

My wise old grandmother

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

My wise old grandmother was a nature lover before tree huggers hit the scene. She was also a conservationist before it was fashionable to be a conservationist. I remember her constant nagging about being kind to wildlife, enjoying the outdoors, conserving our natural resources….. On and on and on.

I didn’t pay much attention when I was living under her roof, but when I set out on my own, it was amazing just how much her teachings influenced what I did and even with whom I hung.

That’s why I’m a big fan of places like the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld. Have they made mistakes in the past? Sure. We all have. But without Zoos and Aquariums, 99% of the people would never get to see, and appreciate, a giraffe, an elephant, a whale, a dolphin, a tiger or lion…. There would also be many species that now would be extinct without the breeding services that zoos and aquariums offer. The California Condor comes immediately to mind, as does the Northern White Rhinoceros.

Whenever I’m out and about, I always try to visit Zoos and Aquariums to show my support, and I have an annual pass to the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld San Diego. Along with their breeding and release programs, zoos and aquariums provide rescue services. The number of seals and sea lions rescued each year by SeaWorld is amazing. One could argue that if the mom is going to abandon her pup, there must be a good reason. Maybe there is, but I’ll go with SeaWorld on that one—rescue, rehabilitate, and release.

Without the programs of the Zoo and SeaWorld, I never would have had the privilege of seeing a Bald Eagle, a Golden Eagle, a Milky Eagle Owl, or an Orca Whale.

In all my travels, I have never seen those four species outside of a Zoo or Aquarium. Of course, I know they exist in the wild, and I had an appreciation for them without seeing them because of how my wise old grandmother raised me. I don’t have to see something to know it, to understand it, to understand why it’s disappearing. Many people do, though. Every time I go to the Zoo or SeaWorld, I hear at least one person, often many many more, say in awe, “I had no idea they were so beautiful” or “I had no idea they were endangered because of us.” Those people, I hope, go home with a greater understanding of this world we live on and how we need to share it with the plants and animals around us.

As an example, recently I was up in Orange County traipsing around when I found the Pacific Marine Mammal Center.

The Pacific Marine Mammal Center is responsible for animals (mostly pinnipeds) stranded on beaches along the Orange County coast, extending north to Seal Beach and south to San Onofre. The majority of the pinnipeds rescued are severely malnourished, suffer from dehydration, and may have respiratory infections. They also treat animals that are affected by drift net entanglement, fishing lines and hooks, human inflicted injuries, shark bites, parasites, and various diseases.

The most common pinnipeds to Southern California are Northern Elephant Seals, Pacific Harbor Seals, and California Sea Lions. Occasionally, they treat Northern Fur Seals, and they are the only temporary holding facility for small whales and dolphins between Santa Barbara and San Diego.

Invariably when I visit the Zoo, SeaWorld, or, in this case, the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, I learn something new. For example, here is what I learned during my short visit to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center:

I have always loved Mylar balloons, but no more.

They are off my LIKE  list and onto my NOT-IN-THIS-CENTURY-OR-THE-NEXT list.

I hope you will join me in my quest to celebrate special occasions with something other than Mylar balloons. A good meal, flowers, and toys come to mind. Maybe even just some quality time spent with those you love and are celebrating with.

Irvine Spectrum Center—It’s fabulous!

Out & About

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Sometimes I have problems convincing newfound friends that I am, indeed, gay. It might have something to do with me liking fast cars, motorcycles, and sports instead of your stereotypical musicals, theatre, hairdressing, flowers, interior design……… 🙂

One area where the gay stereotype does not fail me is in my love for shopping. Even if there is no money left in my monthly budget, window shopping for next month’s budget is just fine……..er, dandy…….er, fabulous!

Between San Diego and Los Angeles there are several great shopping malls. One of my favorite is the Irvine Spectrum Center. Coincidentally, it is located in Irvine, California.

It is an outdoor mall, a style with which I was unfamiliar until I came to San Diego, and has your standard mall fare—Barnes & Noble, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, California Pizza Kitchen, Johnny Rockets, Red Robin, Ruby’s, and The Improv. The outside screenshots of the fictional Mall of Miami from “Austin and Ally” takes place at the Irvine Spectrum Center. If you get tired of shopping (?!), you can always relax on the merry-go-round or the Ferris wheel, permanent entertainment in the middle of the mall.

Ferris wheels lend themselves naturally to having fun with them in Photoshop, and just for your viewing pleasure, I have had my fun and will share it with you here. Each picture was created with just one or two mouse clicks using default presets; nothing complicated but a lot of fun.

Create change

Out & About

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Earlier this year when I went to Laguna Beach for the Festival of Arts (see my posts, Festival of Arts and Laguna Beach), I noticed that the city was remarkably clean and not a homeless person in sight.

I’m still cataloging the hundreds of pictures I took that day, and I just discovered why there did not appear to be any homeless people in Laguna Beach:

Laguna Beach parking meter

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Yes, that’s a parking meter, a pretty parking meter, but it’s more than just a parking meter. See the little “CREATE CHANGE” plaque at the bottom? That tells you exactly where your money is going:

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

What a novel idea! Here in San Diego, I believe parking meter money goes into the general fund, and we all know what happens to general fund money!

Tree roots

Tree roots

Out & About

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Recently I found this tree root which had burst out of the sandstone cliff and made its way about six feet to the ground.

Sadly, the tree is no longer around, and the root has been chopped off at the sidewalk.

For some reason the root had been left there, and I thought it provided an interesting contrast to the sandstone cliff.

Sorrento Valley Pet Cemetery

Sorrento Valley Pet Cemetery

Out & About

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

I have done a couple of blog posts this past week about Sorrento Valley Pet Cemetery:

God Bless Our Pets
There by the graveside will the noble dog be found

Sorrento Valley Pet Cemetery

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

IMG_0123I hope you’ll indulge me by letting me do one more.

I found Sorrento Valley Pet Cemetery completely by accident. I had intentionally gotten lost to try to find something new. I was successful because, outside of Stephen King’s book Pet Sematary, I never knew that pet cemeteries actually existed. By the time I found Sorrento Valley Pet Cemetery, it was time to get to where I was going, so I did not get a chance to stop. The next day, though, I retraced my steps, about 33 miles round trip, specifically to visit Sorrento Valley Pet Cemetery. What I found brought a tear to my eye; to think that my pets were simply buried in the yard with no grave marker at all. I felt so bad.

Following are some pictures from Sorrento Valley Pet Cemetery (SVPC), but before I get to them, let me share something that I found in SVPC’s literature rack.

A Dog’s Last Will & Testament

Before humans die, they write their last will and testament, give their home and all they have to those they leave behind. If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I’d ask:

To a poor and lonely stray, I’d give my happy home; my bowl and cozy bed, soft pillow, and all my toys; the lap, which I loved so much; the hand that stroked my fur; and the sweet voice that spoke my name.

I’d will to the sad, scared shelter dog the place I had in my human’s loving heart, of which there seemed to be no bounds.

So when I die, please do not say, “I will never have a pet again, for the loss and pain is more than I can stand.”

Instead, go and find an unloved dog, one whose life has held no joy or hope, and give my place to him.

This is the only thing I can give you:

The love I left behind.

—Author unknown

Now simply replace “dog” with “cat,” or “bird,” or “lizard,” or any other pet that gave you unconditional love, for our love in return is not limited to dogs only.

SVPC offers almost two acres of peaceful quiet for our beloved pets, including a chapel, a columbarium, and a mausoleum. Inside is a display of caskets, urns, and headstones; a literature rack; and a note board with many thank you notes from appreciative pet owners.

I walked through the grounds and read every headstone. Here is a slide show of some of my favorites:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Did you see “Pumpkin” in the slide show? Pumpkin died in 2010, and I included the headstone simply because it’s Halloween……….. I suspect Pumpkin was an orange cat.

Sorrento Valley Pet Cemetery was founded in 1955 (same year I was born!). One of the reasons why I walked throughout the grounds is because I was looking for the oldest headstone. It’s something I like to do whenever I visit a cemetery. The oldest headstone I found was for Sophie, who died in 1956.

The picture seems to be of a black cat, but I couldn’t be sure. My first cat, a black stray which adopted me in 2006 and was hit and killed by a car in 2007, was named Sophie.

There by the graveside will the noble dog be found

DogDay

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Earlier this week I discovered that there really are pet cemeteries, Stephen King notwithstanding.

Sorrento Valley Pet Cemetery

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Sorrento Valley Pet Cemetery had several poems available in their literature rack. One had been made into a bronze plaque (click on God Bless Our Pets).

That reminded me of the very first pet/dog poem/prose that I ever found.

I had a dog named Bosco when I was growing up in Kingsville, Texas. Bosco was, as my wise old grandmother put it, “a mutt.” He was a lovable mutt, never failing to greet me when I came home from school. Then one day he didn’t. In fact, he never greeted me again. I don’t know what happened to Bosco, but now that I’m not 11 anymore, I’m pretty sure he simply died of old age or was hit and killed by a car. My wise old grandmother never confided in me what happened to Bosco. Maybe she knew, maybe she didn’t.

I missed Bosco so much that I spent many hours in the public library (just two blocks from our house) reading about dogs and pets. That’s when I found the following recitation by George Graham Vest and fell in love with it.

Just a couple of months later we got a new dog for Christmas. He was 100% an indoor dog, a Welsh Corgi named Bougher. The fact that we got a 100% indoor dog now leads me to believe, 46 years later, that Bosco, in his old age, couldn’t avoid a speeding car and had been hit and killed.

Sadly, I don’t have any pictures of my childhood pets, only my two dogs that I had from 1986-1993: Penny, a long-haired dachshund that I rescued from a Chinese couple who were going to eat her for Thanksgiving, and Sugar, a Basenji and Chow Chow mix, more Basenji but with the purple Chow tongue….

….and Sophie, a feral black cat that adopted me in 2006 before being hit and killed by a car in 2007….

Sophie the Black Cat

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

….and, of course, Zoey the Cool Cat, which I adopted from the El Cajon Animal Shelter a day after losing Sophie….

Zoey the Cool Cat

Zoey the Cool Cat is 100% an indoor cat, and the above picture was taken just hours after bringing her into our home.

Hope you enjoy the following prose by George Graham Vest as much as I still do, with a little background on the author and events surrounding his prose.

there by the graveside will the noble dog be foundGeorge Graham Vest (1830-1904) served as U.S. Senator from Missouri from 1879 to 1903  and became one of the leading orators and debaters of his time.  The following speech is from an earlier period in his life when he practiced law in Sedalia, Missouri.  It was given in court while representing a man who sued another for the killing of his dog, Old Drum, on October 18, 1869.

The case was tried on September 23, 1870. Interestingly, it pitted a man named Burden against his brother-in-law (name unknown). Burden’s brother-in-law was a sheep farmer and had vowed to kill any dog found on his property. Vest stated that he would “win the case or apologize to every dog in Missouri.”

Burden sued for $50 in damages, the maximum allowed by law. When Vest’s turn came for his summation to the jury, he ignored the testimony and made the following speech, known as both “Tribute to a Dog” and “Eulogy on the Dog.”

“Gentlemen of the Jury:

Two dogs and a skateboarder“The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man’s reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads.

Two women and two dogs at the beach“The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. A man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master’s side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer. He will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

Fine, furry, four-legged friends (dogs!)“If fortune drives the master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.”

George Graham Vest – 1870

Vest won the case, and won its appeal to the Missouri Supreme Court. There are stories that the jury awarded $500 to Burden, a significant amount in 1870 (and, if true, probably the cause of the appeal to the Missouri Supreme Court).

George Graham Vest was born in Frankfort, Kentucky. Not too far away, in Owensboro, is a state historical marker to him:

Tribute to a Dog

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Over in Missouri, in front of the Johnson County Courthouse in Warrensburg, is a statue of Old Drum:

Old Drum

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

The speech has been used in two movies which were set in Missouri and involved sheep owners who allegedly shot dogs but were then shot themselves by the dogs’ owners, who were then tried for murder. See “The Voice of Bugle Ann” (1936) and “The Trial of Old Drum” (2000).

How I Did It

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

I have not been a big fan of HDR because I thought it was too extreme. There are two people whose HDR work I really like: Bashar Al-Kuwaiti at 2 Rivers Photos (a WordPress blog) and Debi Boucher, a blogging friend from 2007-2011.

Their work has encouraged me to keep trying.

Recently I purchased Photomatix Pro, a standalone program specifically for HDR work. It’s quite a program. There are lots of presets in the program, or you can do everything yourself, or you can start with a preset and then modify it with all sorts of controls. Here are two that I did this morning of the pier at Ocean Beach:

If you want to try HDR, I can recommend the program, and I can even get you a 15% discount on it. Go here to buy the program, and use the coupon code PICTURECORRECT. That should give you a 15% discount, regardless of which version you buy (I bought Photomatix Pro for $99 retail, $84.15 with the 15% discount).
