I was born and raised in the small farming and ranching community of Kingsville, Texas, population 25,000, give or take.
In front of our house, at the street curb, was a mailbox. I used to wait for the mail carrier to raise the red flag to indicate that we had mail, at which point I’d rush out to get it.
Here in the city, we have cluster boxes. They aren’t nearly as much fun as a curbside mail box.
Fortunately, San Diego County has a great many rural areas, so when I do a home inspection out in those boondocks, I often get to see great mailboxes, like these two:

I miss having my own mailbox. I still get excited seeing a red flag up! Too bad, now all we have is a gray (boring) cluster mailbox!

Our cluster boxes blend in with the brick and dirt surrounding them. I guess they are trying to make them disappear because they know how crappy they are…………

I’m assuming a “cluster mailbox” is one of those like you see on American TV where there are lots all in a big bank and you have a key?
Pretty much everyone in the UK gets their post through the letterbox in the front door. I like the idea of a little box on a post with a red flag 🙂

It must have been so exciting to see the little red flag! As a previous follower said, in England our mail is delivered to our doors and often the postmen have to travel down little country lanes or rough tracks to reach their destination. In a rural location and small village like mine, the postman knows everyone and also will look out for if someone, checking if they are ok if they have not been seen for a few days

It was rare that I was disappointed since everything came by mail. The Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogs were the best!
Our mail carrier knew everyone, too, which was nice if I was sitting out on the front steps because I could wave and say hi.
