I want one!

Out & About San Diego

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

I have been playing chess since I was 13. I played competitively throughout high school and colllege but quit that route after I realized that I needed to pay the apartment rent, buy food and clothes, pay the cooling bill (I lived in Houston), and, maybe, buy my first car (a used 1976 Chevrolet Impala with 4,632 miles on it; yes, I have records)……….. little things like that.

Just before I started blogging in 2007, I spent most of my free time playing chess at Game Knot, my favorite chess site…. There are online tournaments, puzzles, forums…. everything a chess enthusiast could want, except, perhaps, actual people sitting across the chessboard from you.

Imagine my surprise and delight when I stumbled upon a chess table at the San Diego County Fair:

See the little guy in the picture? Here he is:

How nice to see a young child playing with something other than an iPod or iPad…….. just saying.

I watched him for about 30 minutes — he’s good. Real good. I wanted to play him but then I realized that I was at the Fair to, uh, see the Fair, not to play chess. That realization allowed me to leave with my ego intact.

There was even a larger chess set for those who don’t like to sit around:

Over in the succulent garden, however, I found my BFF chess set:

I’m pretty happy but Zoey the Cool Cat is not excited. She did, however, approve this post:

Me: “Zoey the Cool Cat, will you approve this post?”

ZCC: “Sure,” she says as she continues to gaze out the window with her tail swishing back and forth at 100 mph.

Me: “ZCC, I need your approval.”

ZCC: “Just publish it and leave me alone! I’m busy stalking birds on the other side of this darn glass.”

Dead tree

Liven up your dead tree

As a home inspector by trade, I get to visit all types of homes in all types of neighborhoods. Obviously it’s fun to inspect a home with 15,000 square feet, indoor pool, outdoor pool, movie theatre, game room, indoor skating rink, tennis courts, basketball court…. well, you get the picture. However, I think I have the most fun going to the boondocks because I just never know what I will find.

Across the street from a house I inspected recently were a couple of dead trees in the front yard. They looked like this:

I know removing dead trees is expensive but somehow I think having them carved into yard art is even more expensive. I do like what they did, though, especially the two young bears climbing the tree to get to that bee hive and all the delicious honey inside.

The theme for this year’s San Diego County Fair is “Out of This World.”

The San Diego County Fair is the sixth largest in the nation by attendance. The universe is invited, and with the wonderful weather that San Diego has, the aliens are here. I did not check their green cards or immigration status. I’m just the photographer………….

I wanted to follow you but, uh, no.

My wise old grandmother

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Unknown flowerDear New Follower:

First, let me thank you for following me. I appreciate it.

Now for the more serious stuff….

I decided that I could not follow you. Please, let me explain.

I’m an easygoing Southern boy born and raised in Texas. My paternal grandparents adopted me when I was a couple of months shy of 11. I understand profanity…. four-letter words.

Angel's trumpetMy granddad used them as verbs, adverbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions, interjections, abbreviations, exclamations, questions, complete sentences, incomplete sentences, names of people….

My wise old grandmother, on the other hand, let granddad use enough profanity for both of them. I only heard my wise old grandmother use profanity once. She wouldn’t let me do something that I wanted to do. I was furious and said, “God damn you.” She was only 5’1″ and I was a towering 6’3″. She took me down with a good right that would make Muhammad Ali proud. Then she said softly, “Don’t damn me, damn you.”

Unknown flower[Make note because this will probably be the only time you ever see profanity in my blog.]

She let me cry for five minutes, as she always did when I was punished, always with a whipping, though, never before with a right hook.

[Do parents spank their children anymore, or is that child abuse?]

Then she took me to the bathroom, drew some warm water, wet a washrag, and cleaned my face of the salty tears, dried me, and told me she loved me. She also told me what would happen the next time I used profanity or the Lord’s name in vain.

Aloe growing in La Mesa, California, January 24, 2012Love and discipline.

[Do parents discipline their children anymore, or just give them an iPod or iPad?]

So, dear New Follower, I wanted to follow you, I really did. My wise old grandmother taught me to do unto others as they have already done unto me…. Wait! No she didn’t. I taught me that. You followed me so I was going to follow you.

When I got to your blog, though, I found that the title was an absolutely horrible title and I left immediately without even looking around. I felt bad about that, so I returned just a few minutes later. I read your home page and one post. It was no better. I left again, and I won’t be returning.

I’m sorry. I really am, but I simply cannot bring myself to follow you. Every time you publish a new post, I would get an email telling me that “New Follower with a poor choice of words for the blog name” has a new post. I already saw that the titles of your posts are just as bad as the name of your blog.

PassionflowerI consider your choice of words to be very negative, and I’ve already had enough negative people in my life. At the age of 57, I surround myself only with positive people.

My wise old grandmother taught me the beauty of the English language with its million words. She also taught me how cruel, mean, and nasty abuse of the English language can be.

I prefer beauty.

Aesop, the ancient storyteller, told this fable:

Daffodil in La Mesa, California, on January 23, 2012Once upon a time, a donkey found a lion’s skin. He tried it on, strutted around, and frightened many animals. Soon a fox came along, and the donkey tried to scare him, too. But the fox, hearing the donkey’s voice, said, “If you want to terrify me, you’ll have to disguise your bray.”

Moral: Clothes may disguise a fool but his words give him away.

Said another way: Profanity is a public announcement of stupidity.

Unknown flower in La Mesa, California, on January 23, 2012Those might sound cruel and uncaring, but you appear to be young. Not like teaching an old dog new tricks. You have a choice. I would encourage you to be beautiful. Maybe too many people have already told you that. Let me in line.

I don’t know anything about you, but I think you have the potential to be a very beautiful person. I believe that about everyone on Earth, all seven billion of them. It’s potential, though. What you do with that potential is up to you.

Every time you want to use profanity, stop and think of a better way to say what you want to say. There are over a million words in the English language, and there are dictionaries and thesaureses to help you in your struggle.

Giant hibiscus and guestMaybe some of my favorite four-letter words can help in your struggle:

  1. Love
  2. Free
  3. Help
  4. Pray
  5. Give
  6. Work
  7. Good
  8. Best
  9. Save
  10. Purple irisHope
  11. Nice
  12. Kind
  13. Glad
  14. Live
  15. Life
  16. Glow
  17. Amen
  18. True
  19. Luck
  20. Purple flowerGift
  21. Calm
  22. Holy
  23. Cure
  24. Kiss
  25. Hugs

If you’re reading this, let me know if you change the name of your blog and perhaps I’ll give it another shot at following you. Until then, good luck in finding your place in the world. I hope you find it because I can see that you are searching.

I want only the best for you, and I apologize if I appear to be judgmental. I simply wanted to let you know why I chose not to follow you. We all have to make our choices, and I hope you’ll choose to be like the unopened flower bud and use your potential in a more positive way. The reach of the Internet allows us to influence many people, but that can be good or bad, depending on you and only you.

Best wishes for health, happiness, peace, and prosperity.

Another wonderful Russel Ray Day

How I Did It

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Earlier today I was doing some camping and replying to some comments when Sheri (sherijkennedyriverside) commented about anticipating “another wonderful Russel Ray day.” That made my day and I wondered if I could do something with that phrase.

Coincidentaly I was studying CorelDRAW X6 and Photo-Paint X6 when I came across the chapter on animated GIFs.

Ergo, my first animated GIF:

African violet

I told myself I couldn’t do it. What did I know?

My wise old grandmother

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

I believe that my wise old grandmother could have been a Master Gardener if such a thing had existed back in her days. Her yard was always blooming, and the house was always full of cut flowers on the dining room table and the coffee table in the living room, as well as smaller vases in the bedrooms. The only bedroom that did not have flower vases was the master bedroom. There she had several African violets near her sewing machine. They were always blooming, and she took very good care of them.

My first attempt at growing African violets was an abject failure, a disaster. I blamed it on them not liking my rowdy dorm at Texas A&M University (Moore Hall; just recently torn down to make way for bigger and better dorms — that’s when you know you’re old, when your dorm is torn down).

I never tried African violets again until a few months ago. I bought just one, a very pretty one. Surprisingly I didn’t take a picture, so I stole it from Jim’s Facebook page:

African violet

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

As soon as it quit blooming and the leaves started dying, I was ready to throw it out. While I was doing some monthly cleaning, I found some items that I thought could be re-purposed to, perhaps, help that little African violet last a little longer.

African violet

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

The plant came in a brown plastic pot with a hole in the bottom. African violets like their roots to be in moist soil and they don’t like water on their leaves, so most people water them from the bottom. I found that blue-green pot which the African violet pot fit into perfectly. I keep the blue-green pot filled one quarter with water that is wicked up into the African violet through the bottom hole.

I set the blue-green pot into the bigger clear bowl and filled it one quarter with decorative rocks and water. The water provides the humidity around the plant which is crucial to African violets thriving. No humidity, dead plant.

Next I took an old desk lamp and replaced the incandescent bulb with a CFL bulb and trained the light on the African violet. I plugged the lamp into a timer and set it so the lamp would be shining on that little African violet about 15 hours a day. African violets like lots of light in order to bloom.

See how finicky this plant is? And this is just one plant! I’m thinking, though, about an automated system for Zoey the Cool Cat. Hmmm.

I kind of ignored the little African violet except for adding water once a week. Yesterday when I went to add water, this is what I saw:

There is a reason….

Opinion

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

AeoniumFriends who have known me for a long time call me ART. It’s not a name; it’s an acronym. It stands for Anal Retentive Tracker. I track everything. When I was in grades 6-12, I used to type up my own lists of everything. If we would have had computers back then………………….

One of the things I track for my WordPress blog is the number of followers. I know what it is on a daily basis. I don’t go out of my way to get followers like some people do when they visit 100 people each day and follow them, knowing that they will reciprocate. Personally, I like to visit people multiple times, get to know them, understand them. That brings me to the purpose of this post.

I am openly gay. I have been since April 27, 1993, which I decided to make San Diego my home. I’m not going back in the closet, not in this lifetime or the next. I met my spouse, Jim Frimmer, on May 26, 1994, about a month after I quit looking for someone — lol. Love seems to work like that. Want love? Don’t go looking for it!

Water lilyJim and I moved in together in November 1995. When California offered Domestic Partnerships, we got domestic partnered (on July 30, 2004). Just doesn’t have the same ring as getting married, so when the California Supreme Court legalized marriage in 2008, we got married (on October 20, 2008).

Our 18+ years relationship/domestic partnership/marriage has lasted longer than Cher & Greg Allman, Todd Meister & Nicky Hilton, Jeremy Thomas & Drew Barrymore, Eddie Murray & Tracey Edmonds, Mario Lopez & Ali Landry, Dennis Rodman & Carmen Electra, Britney Spears & Jason Alexander (55 hours!)…. Perhaps even yours!

We are content, happy, satisfied……………..

Every time I mention something about me being gay, I lose followers. It’s not hard to make that determination. For example, on June 14 at 10:10 p.m. Pacific Time I made this comment. Within 12 hours I had lost 13 followers. That’s why it’s important for GLBTQ people everywhere to come out of the closet and interact with the world in a true and honest fashion.

Now let’s see how many followers I lose after this post — lol.

You don’t have to unfollow me covertly, like by waiting a couple of days. I don’t go through my list of followers to see who has unfollowed me and then reciprocate by unfollowing them. I pretty much follow everyone who follows me, and I follow some who don’t follow me. I don’t follow people who use a poor choice of four-letter words, nor do I follow a couple of R-rated and X-rated blogs.

Alright! Have at it!

Best wishes to everyone — including conservative religious political extremist fanatics — for health, happiness, peace, and prosperity.

My favorite part of the San Diego County Fair each year is the garden exhibits. The theme of the Fair this year is “Out Of This World” and apparently the theme of the gardens was succulents. The creativity in using succulents to get out of this world was amazing.

There were two gardening exhibits that had big, huge, monster, gigantic silver spheres in the exhibit, just perfect for taking self portraits, and I wasn’t the only one doing it. There was a little line of people with cameras — P&S, Bridge, Semi-pro, and Pro — taking self portraits. Here are my two:
