I took 841 pictures on National Train Day (May 11, 2013).

Since I’m trying to stay off of my broken ankle, I have time to catalog them instead of walking around Southern California taking even more pictures.

Following are some pictures taken from inside a Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train traveling north from downtown San Diego to downtown Los Angeles.

Remember driving down a long stretch of freeway and suddenly there’s a crook in the road? You look around and find absolutely no reason for them to put a crook in the road. Railroads do it too!

    Hey, Russel,
Here’s hoping for a swift recovery. When My husband broke his ankle, he taught himself how to play guitar, and I was so proud of him for making the proverbial lemonade. He hasn’t touched the thing since the day he was allowed to walk, but you’ll always have your nice tidy catalog of photos.

There is a really great family of musicians that makes them in Seattle, and plays them beautifully-you could listen to their CDs. Their group is called Magical Strings. I can’t believe they wouldn’t ship to San Diego, although you’d have to tune it down there. I can recommend them highly. It’s worth look. That is really a beautiful intuitive instrument.

I’m familiar with Magical Strings through their tour with Dan Fogelberg back in Summer 1988. I saw them at the Houston Renaissance Festival back in 1990 or 1991. They are the ones who got me hooked on dulcimers.

No idea, but the the x-ray tech and the doctor said it was “subacute,” meaning that it is not recent. They estimated that I probably broke it 7 or 8 weeks ago. I’ve been walking around on a broken ankle!

Russel Ray, when did you break your ankle, and how did you do that????? Hope you are doing ok. I made train reservations for my brother and me. We are going by train from Portland, OR to Indianapolis, IN this fall. I bought a rail pass, so we can get off in places. I’m also hoping we can get to Delaware to see our mom’s cousin, Hal. Can’t wait! 🙂

Portland to Indy is a great train ride, through the heart of the country. Take lots of pictures!

Wow, well take care! I hope it’s not too painful! 🙂 You’ve been walking around on it for weeks, so you either have a high pain threshold, or it’s not too bad. I’m glad you are taking it easy because the true damage can show up later. 🙂 M

I was taking four 200mg tablets of Ibuprofen; 800mg is prescription strength. Now I know why. It’s not a high pain threshold, it’s knowing which medicines make me feel good……….lol

hahaha So you were going through life oblivious to any pain anywhere!!! Well are you off all those now? They can do a number on your kidneys if you keep them up for too long. 🙂

That nuclear plant probably will be sitting there for a very long time. Reports are that there are two thousand tons of radioactive material there and no one knows what to do with it.

That train ride sure was a lot of fun! Thanks for the ride! Looks like you’ve got a lot of good suggestions for keeping yourself busy while you get better. You’ll be a new man by the end of it all!
