I took 841 pictures on National Train Day (May 11, 2013).
Since I’m trying to stay off of my broken ankle, I have time to catalog them instead of walking around Southern California taking even more pictures.
Following are some pictures taken from inside a Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train traveling north from downtown San Diego to downtown Los Angeles.
San Onofre nuclear power plant.
Shut down in January 2012 and announced a couple
of days ago that it is being put out to pasture permanently.
I’ve been working on the railroad….
Remember driving down a long stretch of freeway and suddenly there’s a crook in the road? You look around and find absolutely no reason for them to put a crook in the road. Railroads do it too!
Wave hello to the nice Metrolink commuters!
Looking for real estate services in San Diego County?

If you’re looking for a home inspector,
I recommend Russel Ray — that’s me!
I thought you were quoting Jane Fonda in The Dollmaker. “They’re mine!” Did you see that movie? Very memorable line.

I saw it but I don’t remember it well.

Maybe you should rent it one of these nights and watch it again. It’s a bit dated now. I think it was 1984, but Jane Fonda was really good in this role.

Already put it in my Blockbuster queue.

Hey, Russel,
Here’s hoping for a swift recovery. When My husband broke his ankle, he taught himself how to play guitar, and I was so proud of him for making the proverbial lemonade. He hasn’t touched the thing since the day he was allowed to walk, but you’ll always have your nice tidy catalog of photos.

I wanna learn the hammered dulcimer but there are no dulcimers for sale in San Diego………….

There is a really great family of musicians that makes them in Seattle, and plays them beautifully-you could listen to their CDs. Their group is called Magical Strings. I can’t believe they wouldn’t ship to San Diego, although you’d have to tune it down there. I can recommend them highly. It’s worth look. That is really a beautiful intuitive instrument.

I’m familiar with Magical Strings through their tour with Dan Fogelberg back in Summer 1988. I saw them at the Houston Renaissance Festival back in 1990 or 1991. They are the ones who got me hooked on dulcimers.

Very cool. I just saw them at the Northwest Folklife Festival. Have you thought of contacting them about buying a hammer dulcimer and having it shipped?

Not until this evening. It’s now on my “do more than think about it” list.

I like the old trains best. Two of my uncles worked for Canadian National Railways. When I was young I got to ride in the caboose.

How the heck did you break your ankle? Loved all of these photos…but I am worried about you my friend! Hugs and kisses – B to both you and Jim!

No idea, but the the x-ray tech and the doctor said it was “subacute,” meaning that it is not recent. They estimated that I probably broke it 7 or 8 weeks ago. I’ve been walking around on a broken ankle!

😦 Be well my friend! Have Jim wait on you “hand and foot!” 🙂 Hugs to you both!

Russel Ray, when did you break your ankle, and how did you do that????? Hope you are doing ok. I made train reservations for my brother and me. We are going by train from Portland, OR to Indianapolis, IN this fall. I bought a rail pass, so we can get off in places. I’m also hoping we can get to Delaware to see our mom’s cousin, Hal. Can’t wait! 🙂

Portland to Indy is a great train ride, through the heart of the country. Take lots of pictures!

I will. So are you in a cast now?

No cast. Injury is too old for a cast. I have a choice of staying off of it (as much as possible) or getting a boot to allow me to move around without further injuring it.

Wow, well take care! I hope it’s not too painful! 🙂 You’ve been walking around on it for weeks, so you either have a high pain threshold, or it’s not too bad. I’m glad you are taking it easy because the true damage can show up later. 🙂 M

I was taking four 200mg tablets of Ibuprofen; 800mg is prescription strength. Now I know why. It’s not a high pain threshold, it’s knowing which medicines make me feel good……….lol

hahaha So you were going through life oblivious to any pain anywhere!!! Well are you off all those now? They can do a number on your kidneys if you keep them up for too long. 🙂

That nuclear plant probably will be sitting there for a very long time. Reports are that there are two thousand tons of radioactive material there and no one knows what to do with it.
