My new BFF free digital photo editing program

Opinion

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Before I actually buy software, I like to search around to see if there is anything free that will let me do the things I want to do. Usually there is, but free stuff often comes with other problems.

For example, before I bought Photoshop, Lightroom, Photo-Paint, and PaintShop Pro, I searched for free software that would let me edit my digital photos. I found programs like Picmonkey, Picasa, Gimp, and several others that aren’t even worth mentioning because they were so bad that I don’t even remember them!

My dislike of free programs often has something to do with the free program not having all the functions of the paid program. The free program is just a teaser to, hopefully, get you addicted enough that you will want to buy the paid program. In the early days of computing, we called such programs crippleware.

Another problem is that when you download the free program, you also download all sorts of adware and sometimes malicious software. Been there, done that, and it’s a mess to recover from that.

Open source programs like WordPress have their own issues, often related to the fact that anyone can contribute to open source programs, and sometimes those contributions are not completely functional, crash the program or computer, or are not fully tested for compatibility.

One of the free digital photo editing programs I tried took over my computer for about twelve hours while it searched for all of my graphics in order to catalog them. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t let me multitask while it was searching, so my computer was useless for twelve hours. Even rebooting didn’t interrupt its search. It was like the Energizer Bunny and, once the computer rebooted, simply continued in its quest for all things graphic. As soon as it finished, I summarily removed it from my computer.

Ultimately, I decided that there were significant benefits to tried and true programs that you pay for.

Recently, one of my followers, Wesley Coll (visit his WordPress blog at CollTales) introduced me to Lunapic. I think it’s the best free photo editor I have ever seen. I haven’t had the opportunity to explore everything about it yet, but the things I explored yesterday were very easy and intuitive to use. If you’re looking for a free way to edit your photos, give Lunapic a try. I think you might find it a very useful program.

Here is our favorite little feline, Zoey the Cool Cat, to demonstrate some of the effects easily accomplished with Lunapic.

The only issue I have with Lunapic is that even if I upload a high resolution image, I can’t save my work as anything other than a low-resolution image. There might be some settings that I have not discovered yet, but at this point it looks like Lunapic is optimized for creating something unique to quickly post to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Perhaps even to your WordPress blog!

None of ’em bite

Out & About

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

About 75 miles due east of downtown San Diego is the Desert View Tower:

The view of the desert from the top of the 70-foot tower is spectacular.

Part of the property is designated Boulder Park, a conglomeration of rocks weathered by wind and rain into caves and craggy paths. Along the many Boulder Park paths are animals, faces, and creatures sculpted into the solid granite boulders. W. T. Ratcliffe, an unemployed engineer during the Great Depression, sculpted the “wildlife” for, supposedly, a dollar a day and a jug of wine.

The carvings and tower are registered as official California Historical Landmark #939.

You already met the cat: It’s my favorite.

And where there’s a cat, you know there has to be a dog:

Following are the other sculptures. Hope none of them frighten anyone on a Thursday morning.

New paint job?

Picture of the Moment

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Remember when you got a new car and you would park it in the far corners of parking lots so people wouldn’t bang their doors into it?

The car in the following pictures isn’t new but since it was parked in the farthest side of the parking lot at Fry’s Electronics, I’m thinking maybe it was a new paint job.

I wasn’t the only person taking pictures of the car either. There were 13 people standing around taking pictures. I took my two pictures from the comfort of my car.

Leaves of three

Out & About

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

I do home inspections throughout the ten counties in Southern California:

Southern California

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

If my home inspection is than 30 miles from downtown San Diego, it’s highly likely that I will find something interesting to do, visit, or photograph.

Such was the case a few days ago when I had a home inspection in Vista, which happens to be where my mother-in-law and her boyfriend live.

Vista, California

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

I arrived in Vista early so that I could make a leisurely drive to the property I was to inspect. That’s when I found The Vista Conservancy Nature Preserve and Trails:

I know many of you are thinking, “I bet Russel parked the car, took a hike on the trails, and took lots of pictures.” If you were thinking that, well, you would be right. Here are the pictures:

There were many spectacular homes overlooking the trails. These two were my favorites:

Apparently the trails were created in 2002 as part of Kevin Krewer’s Eagle Scout project.

You want to make sure that you stay on the trails, and if you have dogs, be sure to keep them leashed and on the trails with you, because….

….off the trails, sometimes by a matter of inches, you’ll find lots of this:

For those who might not be familiar with leaves of three, there is a saying that is well-known among hikers in the wilderness: Leaves of three, let them be. In other words, keep an eye out for poison ivy and poison oak, both of which have leaves of three leaflets. The picture above is of poison oak.

Cats

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

I’ve been working for several weeks on a long post about the Desert View Tower about 90 miles east of me…. out in the desert…. could account for the name….

Many decades ago someone carved several animals out of solid granite out there. This is one of them:

It’s my favorite. Feel free to venture a guess as to why.

How I Did It

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

If you remember my Ready! Set! ACTION! post, you might remember that I was pretty sure I was going to buy all the Photoshop actions from PanosFX.com.

Well, I did.

The envelope with a postmarked postage stamp is really cool. Here is our favorite cat helping me with everything:

Zoey the Cool Cat

I had tried many times to create a postage stamp with a postmark and place it on an envelope but after many, many hours I never succeeded in getting a satisfactory product. The envelope, stamp, and postmark took all of a couple of minutes using the PanosFX.com actions.

PanosFX.com has quite a few free Actions, too, so head on over there, register, and download some action!

It’s the longest I’ve ever seen!

Out & About

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

The other day I went looking for murals on the sides of buildings.

I was looking for the longest one, and I remembered one near the SeaWorld exit along Interstate 5.

I headed over there and look what I found:

San Diego mural

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Click on the picture to see it at a size of 3929 pixels long. I used Photoshop’s Photomerge function to stitch together nine pictures to create the long panorama.

How long is the mural? you might ask. Well, conveniently, someone had parked that RV there. Google tells me that the average length of an RV is 25-40 feet. I think 25 feet is too short for that RV so I’m going to say 30 feet. I think seven or eight could park there, indicating a mural length of about 210 feet or so. Of course, since my shoes are size 12, I could just have walked it off!

It’s that time of year!

Out & About

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

It’s that time of year again!

Ice plants are bursting out in color everywhere!

I’m always on the lookout for new places to see the most beautiful displays of ice plant and recently found one.

It’s in Crest Canyon Park at the end of High Bluff Drive overlooking the Del Mar Fairgrounds and the San Dieguito River:
