My great white pelican

Picture of the Moment

A couple of decades ago I was working as a consultant in the wireless telecommunications industry. My home base was San Diego, but I was stationed at the time in Tampa, Florida. I loved it there. The city was great, the Gulf of Mexico and the bays were beautiful, and there were pelicans everywhere. Pelicans probably are my favorite bird that I have actually seen in the wild.

There was a waterfront store in Clearwater that had pelican statues of every shape and size. I knew that my final act when I had to leave Tampa would be to visit that store and buy one of the statues that had a Great White Pelican sitting on a post in the water. I had it shipped to San Diego but, sadly, it was broken when it arrived. I have never seen a similar statue again.

However……………………..

I saw the real thing a few days ago, right here at the San Diego Zoo!

I took a picture and made a Photographic Art stamp out of it:

Now I know what “comfort food” is

Out & About

One of the things I like to do is dine out. In the local vernacular, dine out means not eating at home.

It’s no secret that my favorite restaurant is On The Border, a national chain. There’s nothing quite like a grande raspberry (remember to roll your R’s) swirl margarita accompanied by queso, guacamole, enchiladas, and rice, with a couple of jalapeños resting comfortably on top of the enchiladas.

Throughout the years, though, I also have learned that the local mom & pop hole-in-the-wall restaurants often are quite good. Unfortunately, some of them can also be quite bad, so it’s hit & miss when I try a new one.

In some cases, the book cover encourages me to go inside. Here’s one such book cover that I found in the Clairemont Mesa East neighborhood of San Diego:

Studio Diner, San Diego, California

The’s Studio Diner (says it on the sign; that’s how I know), located at 4701 Ruffin Road.

Studio Diner was built in the ’40s as a “roadside stop.” It is wrapped in chrome, lighted with lots of neon, and decorated inside with behind-the-scenes movie-making equipment. Not coincidentally I don’t imagine, it is set on the lot of a working movie and TV studio, Stu Segall Productions.

You might remember Silk Stalkings and Renegade, both filmed at Stu Segal Productions. Many TV shows and movies have been set here in San Diego, but Silk Stalkings was the first to be filmed entirely in San Diego.

I was by the diner at 7:30 a.m. heading to an 8:00 appointment so I did not get to stop to try their food. The place was quite busy, and it took me a while to get pictures without people or cars in them…. or maybe I just removed the people and cars using Photoshop…. You will never know!

Their web site says that they accept local celebrities so I know I am welcome. More importantly, though, they serve food specifically for the enjoyment of people like me. Check out their verbiage: “fun for the senses,” “serving comfort food,” and “basics like Burgers, Bacon & Eggs, grilled cheese and Reuben sandwiches, chicken pot pies.”

Ah-ha! I always have wondered what comfort food is! Now I know! It’s food that tastes really, really good…. but it is not good for you. My favorite kind of food. Maybe I will go eat there this weekend!

I would eat there!

Out & About

San Diego is not exactly a hotbed of Fortune 500 companies. Our biggest companies on the list are Qualcomm at #149 and Sempra Energy at #281. Occasionally WD-40 and Jack in the Box show up near the bottom of the list.

Recently I was walking in the neighborhood where Jack in the Box has its world headquarters:

Yesterday I was in downtown San Diego’s Sherman Heights neighborhood when I found the coolest Jack in the Box restaurant at 2404 Market Street:

San Diego Historical Landmarks–#751: The Sanford B. Meyers Spec House #1

San Diego Historical Landmarks

For the introductory blog post to San Diego’s historical landmarks, click on San Diego’s Historical Landmarks.

Although I have not finished with San Diego’s historical landmarks #1, I’m going to skip ahead to #751 for a specific reason: It’s no longer a historical landmark!

Here it is, though, as of 6:30 this morning:

San Diego historical landmark #751

That structure, the Sanford B. Meyers Spec House #1, is at 1619 J Street in Centre City.

It was built in 1906 and was approved by the San Diego City Council as a historical landmark in April 2006 due to its architecture and special elements.

The Architecture requirement for historical designation means that it “embodies distinctive characteristics of a style, type, period, or method of construction or is a valuable example of the use of indigenous materials or craftsmanship.”

The Special Elements requirement for historical designation means that it “exemplifies or reflects special elements of the City’s, a community’s, or a neighborhood’s, historical, archaeological, cultural, social, economic, political, aesthetic, engineering, landscaping or architectural development.”

City records describe the house as “A representative example of working class transitional vernacular residential architecture during the third phase of development on East Village beginning in 1906 and ending in 1921.

The main house has two bedrooms and one bath, as does the secondary house, and both houses have 1,000 square feet. It sold most recently at fair market value to Katalyst LLC in November 2005 for $985,000.

City records go on to state that it is one of three such houses still standing and that the historic designation was applied for after Katalyst LLC had begun plans to demolish it (and other neighboring houses) to build an apartment building. There are no neighboring houses now but there is a huge apartment building:

Katalyst fought the historic landmark designation after he bought the property, with ongoing appeals hearings that finally stopped in 2007. The property fell into default in 2008 and was foreclosed on in April 2009 with debt at $1,147,000. The current owner, Jerome Navarra Family Trust, bought it from the bank for $1,050,000 in September 2010, knowing that the historical landmark designation was in place.

Navarra wants to move the house, actually to have someone else buy and move the actual house, so that he can build apartments there.

Moving a historic resource house requires a deposit of $8,000 to $10,000 for the city permit, a California Environmental Quality Act review, and “several tens of thousands of dollars” for permits, all before moving day. It also means that the owner has to hire six professionals: a qualified historian, architect, monitor, and a qualified mover among them. None of that is required with the historical landmark designation removed.

Navarra believed the issue was about private property rights and how the Historical Resources Board needs to do a better job of protecting city history resources. He noted that part of the municipal code says a historical property should be something that the general public can appreciate, not just expert historians. When people look at a property and say, “This is something special,” that’s a historic property.

Bruce Coons of Save Our Heritage Organization, however, noted that the Sanford Myers House actually is something special: “It was worker housing in Sherman Heights—we’ve done little preservation of worker housing in San Diego and almost none of middle-class housing.”

Can the bureaucracy make mistakes which should be corrected? Sure. But what if the original designation was correct and the removal is the mistake? What if the building is now moved and renovated, or even destroyed? What if that becomes the mistake?

Good thing we have pictures, I guess.

Picture of the Moment—Jim and I did NOT stop

Picture of the Moment

Yesterday, Jim and I went to the Spring fundraiser for Cat House on the Kings in Parlier, California, a suburb of Fresno.

We noticed that between Bakersfield and Fresno, there were no grocery stores and very few restaurants, of which about 9 out of 10 were closed.

There were, however, thousands and thousands of acres of orange, peach, and olive orchards; and vineyards; many dozens of oil refineries and fruit silos and train loading facilities; and several very long Union Pacific freight trains, the longest of which I counted at 239 cars, five lead engines, and two end engines, or about two miles long.

We did find one market after going through miles and miles of orchards and vineyards, but Jim and I did not stop….

It’s never too late to donate to your local animal shelter to help with their expenses, or to adopt one of their residents. You can also adopt from Cat House on the Kings or donate to help defray their expenses in providing for their 700+ cats, a dozen dogs, and a handful of goats (cash; cat, dog or webcam sponsorship; items from their Amazon wish list; and more!).

“Cat House” is not just a cute name.

It’s a reality.

Here is the sofa in the living room.

Cat Couch

I want one.

“One of what?” you ask.

Possible answers:

  1. One of those cats.
  2. A sofa with nine cat adornments.
  3. A cat house.
  4. a Cat House.

And now, a message from Zoey the Cool Cat:
