Picture of the Moment—Public art

Picture of the Moment

When the tides are extraordinarily low, as they were today, it’s fun to go look at what I call “low tide art,” carvings in the sand banks that’s only visible during these very low tides.

Here’s one of the best I found today in Ocean Beach:

Covfefe

Would that qualify as public art?

It’s rare that people are in my pictures but sometimes it just can’t be helped.

I won’t walk on it

Picture of the Moment

As I continue to create works of Photographic Art, I find myself gaining a great appreciation of art of all kinds, even art that previously I didn’t particularly care for—Yoko Ono comes immediately to mind.

One thing I know, though, is that I could never walk on art, so when I find walkway art, I tend to walk around it and take pictures while everyone else is walking on it.

Such as these two pieces, found in the walkway at the Scripps Ranch branch of the San Diego Library:

Out & About—SeaWorld sculptures created from ocean trash

SeaWorld

One of the things that I really like about aquariums, zoos, and sanctuaries is that they have so many educational programs.

Sometimes the educational programs take a tack that you weren’t really expecting.

Such was the case on a recent visit to SeaWorld where I found four unique sculptures, unique because they are made completely out of trash that has washed up from the ocean.

Take a look:

Fishing is allowed from the pier since it’s a “fishing pier.”
Not from in the waters or on the beach, though.

Public work of art

I am wondering………………

Picture of the Moment

Remember my post from a few days ago with the lonely dog, ears flying in the wind, sore paw? Here is the dog:

Eat like you mean it

The dog was not by itself. It had three ladies with it. The ladies were painting an electric utility box on the street corner. Today the dog and ladies were back, apparently finished with their work of art:

Art is supposed to make the viewer ponder, wonder…… Alright, then, I am wondering………lol

Ah to be young again

Ah to be young again….

Picture of the Moment

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

When I was doing so much flying and traveling (1994 to 2001; I quit on 9/11/01 — another story), I discovered that the upscale hotels have a lot of interesting art. Here is one that I discovered recently right here in San Diego:

Ah to be young again

Funny thing is that I took the picture but have no idea where I was at the time, just the general location, which doesn’t really help me since the general location is about fifty square miles. Oh, well.

Santa Catalina Island Nature Conservancy public art

Public art that I actually understood

Pictures copyright 2012 Russel Ray Photos

Out & About San Diego

Back in March when I went to Santa Catalina Island for my birthday, one of my goals was to visit the Nature Conservancy, which I did. At the entrance to the patch leading to the Nature Conservancy were these four pieces of public art:

Santa Catalina Island Nature Conservancy public art

There was also a smaller piece of public art, but I don’t think it was part of the official collection:

I’m thinking that it might be a small memorial to the person who created that small collection.

I have difficulty understanding about 50% of the public art I see, but I understood Flower, People, Wildlife, Flower, and Memorial for 100% that day!

The wildlife art of Santa Catalina Island

Frank and Sharon Alters, real estate agents witih Coldwell Banker in Fleming Island, FloridaThis post is dedicated to Frank and Sharon Alters, husband and wife real estate agents with Coldwell Banker Vanguard Realty in Fleming Island, Florida. I have known Frank and Sharon for several years through a real estate professional networking site and highly recommend them for anyone buying or selling a home in the Fleming Island and surrounding areas in Florida.

On my birthday trip a week ago to Santa Catalina Island, my main goal was to see lots of wildlife.

I’m not sure if these qualified:

Those two adorned eagles were outside one of the small shops. These next two creatures were in one of the public parks:

My partner in crime while visiting the Island was Jim Frimmer, a Realtor, and I’m a home inspector. With both of us being in real estate, and being in such an awesome area where virtually everying abides by the adage “Location! Location! Location!”, we could not help ourselves when we saw a huge yellow sign on a house announcing that it would be open for public viewing from 1:00-4:00 p.m. We made sure we would be there. The house had awesome views of the City and Harbor of Avalon but was a little out of my size and price range since it had 4,200 square feet and was listed at $3,295,000. I wonder if the art on the kitchen and bathroom walls had anything to do with the price:

The following art was in front of the Tuna Club building, the oldest building on the Island.

One thing I did discover about Santa Catalina Island is that the people love their wildlife, and justifiably so since there are about 50 species that live nowhere else in the world. I’m pretty sure the above wildlife are not included in that count!
