Many years ago I consulted with a company that was big on teamwork and team building. Each year there was a weekend conference where all sorts of team building took place. Sometimes we could opt out of individual exercises, like fire walking, which I opted out of because we had to sign an injury waiver. Ha!
One of my favorite activities was standing on a platform and falling backwards, trusting that ten of your co-workers standing below you were going to catch you.
(Yeah, right. I’m going to trust those jerks to catch me?)
This great blue heron reminds me of that activity:

I also wasn’t keen on the fire walking. 😉

I remember the most macho guy in the company was going to opt out because his wife was pregnant with twins. He got hazed so badly that he agreed to do it, with his wife’s permission. He was successful until about 30 seconds afterwards when his wife pointed at his foot and said, “Is that a hot coal between your toes?” It was, and then it burned. Quite a testament to mind over matter.

OUTSTANDING! You have a gift for being in the right place…… How do you get all the word press stuff done taking so many shots. Oh, your phone right?

My phone is a 2003 flip phone but Scotty has yet to beam me up with the darn thing. As long as it makes and receives phone calls, and the phone companies support it, it’s all I need. No smarty pants phone for me.

Hi,
That is a lot of trust expecting people to catch you falling backwards, I don’t think I would of been able to that, you would think sooner or later someone would get hurt, if not the person falling then maybe one of the people that are ready to catch, and fire walking no way. 🙂

A millipede. However, it’s a millipede that I put in the picture. Looks pretty real, no?

Fire walking! What kind of stupid would even suggest that to its employees and consultants? SHEEEESH.

A progressive company. About 95% of the company did the fire walk, or about 450 people. Plus all “events” were optional; seminars and such were not.

Yes. I think that at the “first annual team building conference” in 1994 we must have done everything there was to be done. It was an exhausting weekend, and I heard that quite a few people called in sick or took a day of vacation on the following Monday.
